The Holy Spirit Indwells Us

As discussed in our previous post, the Holy Spirit is God and His activity in the life of a believer is critical to our spiritual fulfillment.  In the next several posts, we will look at how He is important to our lives each and every day.

Today we focus on the spiritual truth, He indwells us. Romans 8:9 says, “But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you.”  When we accept Christ as Savior and make Him Lord over our life (Romans 10:9, 10), the Holy Spirit takes up residence inside of us.  He is God’s seal upon our lives declaring to the world and assuring us, we belong to Him (2 Corinthians 1:22; Ephesians 1:13).

Because of the unique presence of the Holy Spirit inside of us, His work is intimate and critical to our walk as disciples of Christ (John 14:17; John 16:13). He illuminates God’s truth (1 Corinthians 2:10-13), He intercedes on our behalf (Romans 8:26, 27), He guides us (John 16:13, 14), He empowers us (Acts 1:8), and He equips us (Galatians 5:22, 23).

In the coming days, we will look at each one of these and seek to understand what they mean to our daily lives as we follow Christ.

Reflection:

  • How does it make you feel to know, as a believer, God literally dwells inside of you?
  • Did you know the gift of the Holy Spirit is God’s seal upon you? What does that mean to you?
  • Does the spiritual truth of the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit affect the way you live your life? The words you speak? The decisions you make?
