If there is one thing we know about Saul, he was a man of strong conviction. He was zealous to the point of hurting those who he believed were a danger to his faith. He persecuted followers of Christ and tried to break them. He would stop them from proliferating their lies no matter what it took. In Acts 9, Jesus confronts saw and reveals he was not helping God, He was fighting against Him.
