After Jesus declared to the false shepherds of Israel that He is the true Shepherd, He went on to further distinguish Himself by stating He is the Good Shepherd.  Contrary to the false shepherds, the Good Shepherd lays down His life for His sheep.  He knows them, calls them by name, and sacrifices Himself for them.
