Matthew chapter two details the visit of the wise men in the east to worship Jesus. Within this chapter is a sad and frightening tale of rebelliousness and outright rejection of God by the religious leaders as well as Herod himself. During this season, do not ignore the Savior, or worse, cast Him to the side.
The night of Christ's birth, the shepherds were simply doing what shepherds do. Living among their sheep. Watching out for those in their care. Then something changed everything. An angel of the Lord appeared with an announcement. What was their reaction? They leapt into action! They began to spread the word about baby Jesus and did so with such enthusiasm that those who heard were amazed!
Joseph, who cared for Mary and helped raise the Messiah, shows us what simple obedience looks like. God said, “go,” and he said OKAY. He didn’t have to be a great religious person or know how everything was going to work out. He simply obeyed. Can the same be said of us?
The angel’s encounter with Elizabeth and Zechariah reminds us that God's timing is always perfect, even when it seems untimely. Just as Elizabeth (who was thought to be beyond her childbearing years) conceived a child in her old age, we can trust God in the good times as well as the untimely, challenging events of our lives. There will be surprises along life’s way, but there will also be blessings beyond our imagination.
